Sweat patch drug testing for family court.
TrueTest applies and removes court sweat patches at our Elk Grove Village office for custody and family court cases. It costs $150 per patch, and each patch is worn 7 days, up to 10.
A drug test that runs all week, not one day.
A sweat patch is a small adhesive patch worn on the skin. It collects drugs that leave the body in sweat for as long as it is on. A urine test shows the day of the test. A patch covers the whole week.
That is why courts use it to monitor a parent between visits. Our collector puts the patch on and takes it off. The person being tested never does either.
How it works.
- Our collector applies the patch. It goes on the upper arm or back, at our Elk Grove Village office or by a mobile collector.
- You wear it for 7 days. Removal is on a set weekday. The patch may stay on up to 10 days, but only to cover a day you can't come in. Patches worn past 7 days start to lift.
- Our collector removes it and seals it. The patch is sealed in front of you and sent to the laboratory under chain of custody, a signed record of every handoff.
- The next patch goes on at the same visit if the program continues. The cycle repeats for as long as the order requires.
You never apply or remove a patch yourself. The patch is tamper-evident. No one can stop a person from pulling at it, but the patch shows when it has been disturbed.
What it detects, and what it can't show.
The standard panel is amphetamine, methamphetamine, cocaine, PCP, opiates and THC. It can be expanded to more opiates and fentanyl. The patch does not detect alcohol. For alcohol, courts order a PEth blood test or breath testing.
The window is the whole time the patch was on. A positive result means a drug was present at some point during that week.
Not which day
The result covers the whole wear period. It can't point to one day or one event.
Not how much or how often
The number is what the patch collected over the week. It can't be read back into an amount or a count of uses.
Not impairment
A result says nothing about whether someone was under the influence at a given moment.
When a result comes back, sweat patch results explained walks through how the report reads and how a positive is decided.
Sweat patch, urine or hair.
Each test answers a different question. The right one depends on what the case turns on.
| Test | Window | What it proves | Weakness |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sweat patch | The whole wear period, usually 7 days | A drug was present at some point while the patch was on | Can't name a day. No alcohol. A lost patch is a lost week. |
| Urine | Days | Use around the day of the test | Use between tests can be missed. Dilution and substitution are risks. |
| Hair | About 90 days | A pattern of use over recent months | Misses the last 10 to 14 days. A single use may not show. |
For a program that combines tests over months, see ongoing monitoring options.
What happens if a patch lifts or goes missing.
A donor may tell us the patch fell off. TrueTest cannot determine whether a patch came off on its own or was removed. Every donor is told that if the patch appears to be lifting, take a picture and text it to us; from that we decide the next step. Patches do not come off all at once — lifting is visible before a patch is lost.
If the patch is not attached to the body when the donor arrives for removal, there is no result. The patch is cancelled, a notice goes out, and a new patch is applied at that visit.
What the court order should say.
The order should set two things: how long the program runs, and the change schedule. Seven days on a fixed weekday is the protocol. An order that leaves the wear period open invites the ten-day stretch that loses patches and slows results.
It should also name the panel, including fentanyl or added opiates if those are a concern. Our court order form names specific tests. The wear period and the change schedule are terms to add.
$150 per patch.
Each patch is $150. That covers putting it on, taking it off, and the laboratory test.
In a weekly program, each visit removes the old patch and applies the next one. Four weeks is four patches, $600. The last visit is a removal only.
How to schedule.
Order online and choose Sweat patch, then tell us how many weeks the order calls for. We call to set your first visit. Patches are applied at our office at 2256 Landmeier Rd in Elk Grove Village, Monday to Friday, by appointment, or by a mobile collector. Bring a government photo ID and your court order if you have one.
Sweat patch questions, answered.
How much does a sweat patch drug test cost?
$150 per patch at TrueTest Labs in Elk Grove Village. That covers applying the patch, removing it, and the laboratory test. In a weekly program each new patch is another $150.
How long is a sweat patch worn?
Seven days, removed on a set weekday. It may stay on up to 10 days, but only to cover a day you can't come in. Patches worn past 7 days start to lift.
Can the person being tested remove the patch?
No. Only a TrueTest collector applies and removes it. The patch is tamper-evident: no one can stop a person from pulling at it, but the patch shows when it has been disturbed.
Is a sweat patch accepted in family court?
Family courts order sweat patches to monitor drug use continuously in custody cases. Each patch is applied and removed by our collector, sealed under chain of custody, and tested by a SAMHSA-certified laboratory. Whether a result is admitted is up to the court.
What happens if the sweat patch falls off?
If it starts to lift, take a picture and text it to us, and we decide the next step. If the patch is not on when you come in for removal, there is no result. The patch is cancelled, a notice goes out, and a new patch is applied at that visit.
