DNA Testing · Elk Grove Village

Paternity test while pregnant

A DNA test while pregnant takes a blood draw from the mother and a cheek swab from the alleged father. Nothing touches the baby. From 10 weeks pregnant.

What the test involves

Two samples, collected separately. A blood draw from the mother, and a cheek swab from the alleged father. It is non-invasive — nothing is taken from the baby, and there is no procedure involving the pregnancy itself.

The mother and the alleged father do not need to come in together. Each schedules separately — different times, or different days. Whatever works for the two of you.

The standard test, at $905, is for informational purposes. A legal version is also available, at $1,400. Both are described below.

Two options

What it costs

Informational $905 · Legal $1,400 Legal = collected under chain of custody

Informational and legal are the two forms this test comes in. What separates them is chain of custody — the documented handling of the sample from collection through the laboratory.

Informational — $905

The standard prenatal test

  • Blood draw from the mother, cheek swab from the father
  • No chain of custody
  • Collection at our Elk Grove Village office
  • A second draw, if one is needed, is included

Which one to choose

Timing

10 weeks pregnant, at the earliest

The mother needs to be at least 10 weeks pregnant — the same measure your doctor uses when they tell you how far along you are.

The reason is what the test reads. It works by finding the baby’s DNA in the mother’s blood, and before 10 weeks there may not be enough of it there yet to produce a result. Testing too early can mean coming back for a second draw. Waiting until 10 weeks is in your interest.

If a second draw is needed, it is included. The $905 is all-in — testing early does not cost you twice.

The mother’s blood draw: Monday through Thursday

Blood draws for the mother happen Monday through Thursday. The week’s availability is confirmed by phone — call and we will tell you the days open that week.

The father’s cheek swab: any time

The Monday-to-Thursday window applies only to the mother’s blood draw. A cheek swab is stable for a long time and carries no timing constraint at all — the father can come in whenever it suits him, before or after the mother’s draw.

Where collection happens

The $905 covers collection at our office in Elk Grove Village.

For the father’s swab, mobile collection and collection arranged at another site are available for an additional fee, quoted by phone. Call 847-258-3966.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How early can I get a DNA test while pregnant?

From 10 weeks pregnant. Before that there may not be enough of the baby’s DNA in the mother’s blood to produce a result, which can mean a second draw. If a second draw is needed it is included at no additional charge.

Is it safe for the baby?

The test is non-invasive. It needs a blood draw from the mother and a cheek swab from the alleged father. Nothing is taken from the baby.

Do the mother and father have to come in together?

No. Each schedules separately — different times or different days, whichever is easier.

How much does a paternity test while pregnant cost?

The standard informational test is $905. A legal prenatal test is $1,400. A legal paternity test after the birth is $185, all-in for both parties.

What days can the mother’s blood draw happen?

Monday through Thursday. The days available in any given week are confirmed by phone — call 847-258-3966 and we will tell you what is open.

Can you collect the father’s sample somewhere else?

Yes. Mobile collection and collection arranged at another site are available for the father’s cheek swab for an additional fee, quoted by phone.
